We had booked & paid for a room with a balcony, we didn't get that and no explanation was forthcoming. The Air-Con wasn't working in our room. The carpet was old and musty. We changed rooms for the next nights. The TV remote control wasn't working in this second room, otherwise everything was fine. The decor on the corridors was lovely. The welcome was poor, we arrived early at midday and housekeeping were informed and we were told that the room should only be half an hour. An hour and a half later when we returned we were told that we were too early and therefore couldn't have the room as it wasn't ready. Overall service at this hotel was very slow in all departments, room service […] was a challenge as the menus were out of date in the room and the hotel breakfast served in the restaurant overpriced - better value could be had from room service for breakfast at half the cost.The room itself was good, had a lovely view from the balcony of the beach but unfortunately the beach area in Durban is not the place to be and we were advised not to go out after dark, and when we did go to a nearby restaurant it was slightly off putting to be locked in, and have the door locked after us when we left! First of all, they have done a nice job with the remodel our room and hotel was very nice! But that is not enough to make us stay again - when we checked in at 11 pm we had one desk gal that was extremely helpful and nice and one that was not at all. We are in customer service and tried to bring her around not a good way to keep customers. So the "night […] life" activity outside the hotel was concerning, parking was limited, everything had an extra charge parking, Internet and breakfast almost $20 a person. We choose to go to a wonderful coffee shop up the road. Our room was not completed when we got to it. While we lived the patio and the view it would not be enough to stay again. The overall experience was good, service excellent however we were not happy that the bed was a double bed instead of king and because it was a busy weekend the management could not change our room....we slept uncomfortably! Since we had spent our honeymoon at the Edward 34 years ago we were disappointed as we were really looking forward to our stay […] there!!! Läs mer

A charming hotel with very helpful staff. Lovely breakfast and a beautiful cocktail bar. Our guide from the hotel was most helpful by showing us some lovely places to visit in Durban.

I had no problems there. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and well looked after. The restaurant had limited choices. The location opposite the beach and close to the Kings Mead Stadium (for the Comrades Marathon) were great.

This hotel has retained the old world colonial charm with dark wood and marble floors. This hotel has character. The staff are friendly and are well informed as to good tourist destinations. We were warned not to venture very far from the hotel due to safety issues. Visitors should be aware that this hotel is situated in the CBD area on the sea front […] where the 'black' population live. There is a strong police presence on the sea front. Despite paying a steep daily rate, our room was disappointingly small. Housekeeping staff were often unfriendly. The hotel's pool is is tiny, only good for a couple small children to play. All that being said though, the hotel is conveniently located on the Golden Mile, making attractions such as Ushaka Marine Park, the Holocaust Museum, and the Natural […] Science Museum within easy walking distance. Other destinations such as Florida Road, the Arena, the Botanical Gardens and Wilson's Warf were a quick taxi ride away. The concierge at Protea Edwards was very friendly and eager to help. Overall a 3 and half Star experience. It's an old art deco building with a recent (few years?) 'cosmetic' facelift. Rooms had a comfortable appearance much like any modern hotel despite age of building. Beds small - only double size in our room, and room fairly small but spacious storage. Flat screen Sony tv with satellite. A fridge (empty) and kettle […] too. Bathroom wasn't refurbished except for toilet, so bath tub looked abit dated. Aircon surprisingly powerful, chilled room in minutes, but a bit clonky and too noisy. Windows were cheap plastic double glaze with lots of gaps in so bit noisy with outside noise. On checkin we were told no non-smoking rooms available (despite checking in at check in time 1400) perhaps due to being fully booked for the following weeks conferences (which are frequent in Durban due size of the international conference centre). However despite some grumbling and pleading we were give a reluctant room change then and there; so good service recovery by staff. Restaurant - buffet or ala carte. Buffet was very small and limited; far from your Hilton or Marriott buffet! So went for menu instead and had fish and meat which were plentiful and still cheaper than the buffet even with drinks and desserts! - tiptop! Swimming pool on roof, like rest of Africa was not heated. The Durban waterfront is not that appealing, actually very disappointing. The city is actually quite rough and constantly looking over ones shoulder for criminality, lots of homeless too. Would highly recommend Umhlanga district which is 10km north of the city, it is about halfway to airport. There is even a Protea Hotel there too. Umhlanga rocks is much better, more peaceful and civilised, bit like Venice Beach compared to Los Angeles. Lots more bars and restaurants with mostly western and affluent residents and guests. Friendly helpful staff, comfortable accommodation. Only adverse comment- the roast beef in the restaurant the night we ate there must have been the toughest bit of old trek-ox in the business. A big disappointment! Choose something else!

The service at this hotel was phenomenal. There most friendliest Porters I ever met in my entire hotel stays. They are prepared to walk an extra mile. I did not have to roam around with my luggage whilst waiting for my plane time as they savely kept my luggages. The food was excellent and affordable to me as a Prokard holder. I will call again and recommend […] others to stay there. The hind side, the person at the till remained with my R50.00 change because he could not find change in time and the chartered bus was ready to the airport. Läs mer

Rooms were very clean, split lounge/bedroom area with small kitchenette. Bed very comfy, heating/AC, sofa bed in lounge - could do with somewhere to put cases as bedroom small. Room service/maid service excellent and fast, reception could not do enough for you from directions to providing a reasonable driver (son of receptionist), very friendly staff. […] Pool small but nice, bar service and full reakfast available, though couldn't comment on quality as we ate out. Location is 10 mins walk to waterfront, which was ideal. Excellent mexican El Burrito 5 mins away and lovely cafes in a small mall 10mins walk away. Was me and my son and we had a great time. Would recommend Travolta the taxi driver on 0734383676, reliable, cheap and good bloke, took us to airport for 200 when others were quoting 350. Läs mer

We stayed a single night at the Protea Hotel Edward on the beachfront for the World Cup. Check-in was smooth but we were put into a foul smelling smoking room though we'd asked for non-smoking. The staff were helpful and moved us to a non-smoking room with sea-view. Our experience there was neutral, and I'd recommended choosing The Balmoral hotel next […] door which we also stayed at thereafter. What is clear is that it is an aging hotel, but on the seafront that is pretty much the standard offering. Läs mer

très bonne impression cependant le coffre de sécurité dans les chambres n'est pas assez grand pour un y glisser un portable 13 pouces.Attention se balader aux alentours dès la nuit tombante est dangereux, et il faut rester prudent en journée. Préférez les taxis.N'hésitez pas à négocier les prix des services proposés par le concierge ( navette etc.)

Bra beliggenhet på strandpromenaden. Et veldig lite bassenget på 7. Etg. Bildene fra hotellet kan lyve, det så ut som om bassengene som var avbildet tilhørte hotellet, det gjorde de ikke. Veldig dyr frokost, samme pris for voksne og barn. Vi spiste bra frokost og lunsj på stranda, og litt til, for samme pris som kun frokost på hotellet.

Estuve seis noches con motivo de un Congreso internacional celebrado en una universidad de la ciudad. El tamaño medio del hotel, en comparación con otros mayores de la zona, le hace más atractivo. El personal fue muy servicial, y los desayunos generosos.
