Hotell Swallow Three Tuns Hotel - Durham

I loved the fact that there were biscuits and hot chocolate (I do not drink tea/coffee) on the hospitality tray. The food at night was excellent, as was the breakfast, and the service was very friendly and helpful. However, I find it irksome that hotels in general pay so very little attention to the cleanliness of their bathrooms. 'pink' discolouration […] around the tiling and silicone is simply a lack of cleaning and has nothing to do with wear and tear. This hotel was no exception and, I saw two rooms here that could have done with better cleaning in the bathrooms. It is not a matter of 'modernising' - it's a matter of housekeeping! I have neither the desire nor the time to have to ask for bathrooms to be cleaned again, I expect that this simple act is done as a matter of course. Who can think that a bathroom is clean when the it 'screams' at you like that? It does not happen overnight! The bathroom is cleaned after each stay! I take a shower each day in my own bathroom, so it is not the frequency it is used, it is the standard and quality of cleaning! Give these poor women enough time to do it! Läs mer

The hotel itself was very old world charming but could do with re-decorating as in some places past its best. The room itself was comfortable but the shower did not work. I took a hairdryer as had read previous reviews stating some were found not to work so can't comment on this. Altogether a pleasant stay in a lovely setting.

after being firstly given a room that hadnt been cleaned from previous occupants ,,,we were upgraded,,,,but the sheet on the matress didnt even fit it only covered three quarters of the bed,,,,tea making facilities were sparse to say the least,,,breakfast on first day was ok even though the staff were unfriendly ,,,but on the second day our bacon was […] off and after pointing this out we were just told sorry and our plates taken away ,,,wasnt even offered another breakfast .......at checking out there was no have u enjoyed your stay ,,thankyou or goodbye ,,,too busy talking among themselves overalll never been so let down ,,,not one for reviews usually ,,,,but this one deserves it RUBBISH Läs mer

We have just returned after spending two nights(now wish we'd booked longer!) at the Three Tuns Hotel and thought it was fabulous. After reading some of the comments on Trip Advisor we were a little apprehensive as to what we might find BUT it was all positive. Nice Hotel, a little dated could do to employ a handyman/painter to freshen the decor and from what I could see some minor repairs here and there. It is all cosmetic and easily put right. Overall very friendly staff and very clean and comfortable, tea making stuff in room and a decent breakfast next morning.

Great location right in the heart of Durham, within easy walk of the Cathedral and the Castle. There are plenty of rooms and suites and there's parking too. This is the oldest hotel in Durham and is full of character but I couldn't help but think things could have been better. One must be willing to forgive certain characteristics that come with age […] such as sloping floors and creaky stairs. I stayed mid-Dec 2011 and it was cold outside and unfortunately inside my room too on the top floor. I couldn't feel any heat from the radiator more than 6 inches away, the duvet was quite thin and the extra blanket wasn't enough to make me comfortable. Perhaps the sash window needs some secondary glazing. It's interesting how the stairs and landing were warm but my room wasn't. I needed to ask for a fan heater from reception to help me out. The decor in the room was nice enough but the bathroom needed updating - pink lino! The shower was OK though and the bathroom had a heated towel rail. The room had a small CRT TV which did have about 10 channels but reception was a bit fuzzy and the remote was knackered. I think people expect flat screen digital freeview these days - see Premier Inn. The hotel is a lovely building with exposed beams and open fires and a bar and restaurant and that's all very nice. I do think the bar and the fireside could have been a bit 'softer' so to be more welcoming and a place you could just sit and read. The service at reception was good and the barman was friendly, but the breakfast service left plenty to be desired, again - see Premier Inn. Should hotel guests be talked to as if they are a hindrance on your day and serving breakfast is a terrible thing to have to do. Snap - "coffee?" No thank you, actually I'll just have some juice. The hotel is very well located. Staff service was good, and the breakfast was great. However, the bathroom left a lot to be desired (toilet seat was even wobbly!), and the TV in the room was an aerial one which was out of tune. For my purposes- staying for one night centrally in Durham with a car-park, the hotel was ideal. If you want a more luxurious […] stay there are other hotels nearby which would probably suit better. The Three Tuns in Durham is situated right by the heart of the city, a short walk across the medieval bridge and you're in the main square or on the cathedral green. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and it's a very popular inn. There's a very eclectic mix of guests - on my visits I've met groups of ex-miners on a re-union, staff from the […] local hospital having their Xmas party, and lots of visitng walkers stopping over en route to some other hilly challenge! I've stayed in a few places in and around Durham on my visits to see my daughter who's at university there. This is defintely my favourite. Other hotels may be more swanky ( and therefore pricier), or they may have a more impressive outlook, across the river, for example, to the cathedral and castle. But none are nearer to the heart of Durham, more relaxed and friendly or more "olde worlde" in the spirit of this magical town. Läs mer

Not easy to sleep in the room. There were thin curtains and a street light immediately outside. Also the central heating was fairly loud all night.

It appears that this Hotel is in the process of renovation; the dining room, lounge areas and toilet facilities were good. There is no lift, a problem that was not mentioned on your web site. Our bedroom was in need of a total revamp. The sash window was stuck in the half open postion, allowing traffic noise and exhaust fumes from the busy sttrret below.This […] was closed for us resulting in a stuffy atmosphere. The bathroom was very sub- standard, mildewded grouting round the bath and a loose and ineffective toilet flush lever. A limited dinner menu but acceptable food, good breakfast. Comfortable & clean - beakfast excellent. Ideal location for sight seeing. Good car parking facility.

As well as having close proximity to the town centre, shops, sites and university, this hotel had wonderful staff who were friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel and would happily recommend it to anyone, my only negative would by the price is quite expensive!

Nice Hotel with the main attraction being the convienience excellent location. Virtually next door to the marriot and half the price. Staff were friendly, the room was fairly basic but the bed was comfy and the shower hot so who needs a 32" plasma with all the satellite channels .

This hotel could do with a really good refurbishment. It is a lovely building (apart from the ugly 60's extension!) but the decor is tired and the bathrooms very outdated and in need of replacement. The people were great though, the service was good and the location was perfect for me. Having the use of a car park in Durham City centre is invaluable […] too. A really convenient hotel with good access to Durham city, the cathedral, castle and river-side walk. Very helpful and friendly staff. Room was comfortable and spacious. The bathroom worked well but was in urgent need of a make-over.

Good value, traditional hotel although a bit tired. Tasty, well cooked breakfast although little variety if staying several days. Have stayed here a few times and the central location makes up for the lack of.modern, contemporary accomodation.Staff are friendly and helful. Plan to stay again.

Great location for exploring Durham City. Ask for room at back of Hotel to beat traffic noise. Good basic place to stay as a base

The hotel is very conveniently located to both Durham Unviersity and the Cathedral. The staff are kind and efficient. The actual fabric of the hotel really needs a makeover; however the location and price compensates for the very tired look of an otherwise charming hotel.

Durham is a small city which you caan see in less than a day. Visit the city on the way through to somewhere else, do not stay here!

A charming old hotel in an excellent location with exposed timber beams in the breakfast room and very helpful and pleasant staff. However, some refurbishment is due, especialy some carpet wear and we were disturbed at a very early hour by what appeared to be a collection of glass for recycling very close to our window (room 63)

The outside of the hotel could certainly do with a facelift and we were apprehensive about our stay because of that. However we were happy with the room-basic a good size but clean. The main advantages were that it's so central-a couple of minutes away from the Cathedral shops and 'restaurantsAlso close to the riverside for a walk. Another big plus […] is the large free carpark. A pleasant stay in a hotel in an excellent location but in need of re-furbishing. Uninspiring food - very nice and helpful staff.

The room was large and comfortable, though as other reviewers have said it would benefit from a 'touch up' . We stayed in the old and quirky part of the hotel which was quite creaky. Staff were in the main pleasant but the breakfast staff could have made it clearer that we had to serve ourselves with cereal and juice before ordering cooked breakfast. Good breakfast kept us full for several hours. Room was spacious. Beds were comfortable, but bathroom was a bit tired eg sink was cracked, though shower was great once I understood how it worked!

Der er masser af plads på hotellet til et rygeområde afsondret fra resten af hotellet. Der er ikke længere gratis vand på flaske. Kun en elkoger ingen kaffemaskine, det må I hellere rette. Ellers et udmærket hotel - lidt gammelt […] og nedslidt men ret charmerende. Tæt på cathedral, castle og flod og en taxa fra hotel til banegård er billig, når hotellet ringer efter den hvad de gerne gør.
