We had booked a Seaview room with a balcony/terrace. At check in, there was a small whispered conversation between the staff, but we got our key and where shown to the room. We immediately noticed there was no balcony, and though you could glimpse the sea, the most prominent view was over what appeared to be the back area of the kitchen, with lots of trash.
We called the reception, and they initially just said that, yes they were overbooked, and this room was what they could offer. After arguing that that was certainly not my problem, as I had booked and paid (in advance) a Seaview room, we were offered a complimentary dinner and to be moved first thing in the morning, which we accepted.
Next morning after breakfast we asked about the new room. At first, we had a repeat of the same discussion - overbooked, nothing else available etc - but in the end we tracked down the manager who agreed to move us, but we're informed not before 14.00. At 14.45 I went back to remind tem, and EVENTUALLY we got the new room.
The entire event left me quite annoyed. It felt like they were trying to downgrade us and just pocket the payment for the better room we had bought, hoping we would either not notice or not complain. Plain dishonest.
The hotel is quite nice, the Seaview room we eventually got was very good, the food was excellent. Had we been told up front at checkin there was a problem, this review would have been very different.
But as it is, we will not be coming back.
