My wife and I were booked for Jan 2-5, planning to come in the day after the Sugar Bowl and New Years crowds. Then on January 1 they had a domestic terrorist kill 14 people and plant two bombs. The town shutdown and the bowl game was delayed. I called the hotel and asked if I could delay my trip by one day, and was told that I could with no cancelation or rescheduling charges. I then contacted Hotels.com to make the change. I explained to them that I had already spoken with the hotel, and they confirmed that there would be no additional fees, but that I would have to pay the room rate difference. Fair enough, I was changing the night of Thursday Jan 2, to Sunday Jan 5. I was told that it would be an additional $81. "For one night?" No, hotels .com told me that they would have to cancel all three nights and rebook three new nights. I told them I didn't want to cancel the nights of the 3rd and 4th, but they told me that their policy required a new reservation. By the time I finally agreed, I was informed that it was now $98 as the rates had increased. Finally we settled somewhere in the middle. The Hotel.com rep told me that he tried speaking with the hotel to get them to only charge the increased rate on the one night that I had not previously reserved, but that they wouldn't do it. So, between the Hotel taking advantage of the situation, and Hotels.com insisting that they had to cancel all three days of my reservation, I am very unlikely to use them again.
